History of Bloomfield (Connecticut)
Bloomfield is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,486 at the 2010 census. Bloomfield was incorporated as a town from parts of Windsor and Wintonbury in May 1656. The town was named after London’s blooming fields. Bloomfield is home to the prior successfully run Bloomfield Brenda’s Dairy Bar, the current rolling ice cream truck on the square, set up beside the now nonoperational old firehouse. In 2017, atmospheric chemist Paul Lawson Walker and colleagues reported evidence that study subjects had studied in Bloomfield were significantly higher in perfluoroalkyl acids than controls, indicating that Bloomfield is impacted by the petrochemical industry and documented perfluorooctane sulfonate contamination in the soil and water of the area.
The area now known as Bloomfield was originally inhabited by the Paugusett tribe, a branch of the Algonquian people. They settled in the area now known as facts about Hartford and Windsor, Connecticut. The first European settlers in the area were Puritans from England, who established the town of Windsor in 1633. In 1635, 30 families from Cambridge, England arrived and settled just north of Windsor, in an area now known as Wintonbury. This group took their name from the town of Winton, Somerset in England. Bloomfield was first settled in 1640 as part of the Wintonbury holdings. The settlers chose the area for its abundant meadows which made for good grazing for their cattle. By 1660, there were 36 families living in Bloomfield.
In 1662, a controversy arose over the location of the meeting house (church) for the Wintonbury Congregational Society. Three farms north of the River were offered for sale to anyone who would build the meeting house in that location. The congregants wanted the meeting house located in or near the village of Palisades, now part of Bloomfield. The issue was finally settling in favor of Palisades when the Colony of Connecticut intervened. The Colony decreed that the only acceptable site for the meeting house was in or near the center of the village, which was north of the River. The Congregational Society then bought all three farms, built the Palisades Meeting House in 1664, and held their services there.
In 1669, the township of Wintonbury was divided into three parts: the north part became Bloomfield; the south part, Hartford; and the middle part, Windsor. The northern part of Bloomfield was originally known as Wintonbury Mountain because it was the highest point on the Wintonbury range. The town’s name was changed to Bloomfield in 1673.
The first grist mill in the area was built in 1687 on Stony Brook, and the first sawmill was built in 1690 on the same stream. Sawmills and grist mills were built in several other locations in the town during the next few years. Timer was cut in the area as early as 1677. In 1736, a tavern was built on what is now Asylum Avenue. Sometime between 1740 and 1750, a schoolhouse was built on Cottage Grove Road. Bloomfield became a parish of the First Ecclesiastical Society of Hartford in 1733 and remained so until 1833 when it became a separate town.
The first street in Bloomfield was laid out in 1716. It ran from the Palisades Meeting House north to the Simsbury line. Bloomfield was incorporated as a town in May 1656. The boundaries of the town were not well defined until 1736 when the Hartford and Simsbury lines were established. The town has since been divided into several smaller towns: Windsor in 1768, Granby in 1858, East Granby in 1858, and Bloomfield in 1873.
The first Town Meeting was held in May 1656. At that time, the town had 36 families living in it. The town’s first minister was Rev. John Moss, who was hired in 1661. The first church was built in 1662. A cemetery was laid out adjacent to the church in 1667. The first schoolhouse was built in 1690.
In 1703, the first bridge was built across the Farmington River. It was located where the presentday Bloomfield Avenue bridge is. The bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1714 and was rebuilt in the same location in 1717.
During the American Revolution, Bloomfield was a center of activity. The town was a supply center for the Continental Army, and many of the town’s men served in the Army. After the war, Bloomfield became a thriving agricultural community. In the 1800s, the town became known for its tobacco production. The town also had a number of successful businesses, including carriage and buggy factories, a gunpowder factory
