History of Largo
Largo is the third largest city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. Largo was first incorporated as a town in 1905. Three years later, in 1908, it became a city. It is part of the Tampa Bay Area, and is approximately 12 miles northwest of the city of St. Petersburg and 20 miles southwest of the city of Tampa.
Largo’s early history is very similar to the history of other small towns in Florida. The first permanent settlers were pioneers who arrived in the area in the early 1800s. These pioneers were attracted by the area’s plentiful timber and game. They built log cabins and farms and cleared the land for cultivation.
In the late 1800s, the area began to attract retirees from the Northern states who were looking for a warm place to spend their winters. These retirees helped to increase the population of the town and also brought much needed economic activity.
The next wave of population growth came in the early 1900s when the town became a destination for tourists from around the country. Tourists were attracted by the town’s warm climate and beautiful beaches. This tourist activity helped to stimulate the local economy and led to the construction of several hotels and other businesses catering to tourists.
The city of Largo was officially incorporated in 1905. The first city government was led by Mayor W.A. Gleason. One of the first acts of the new city government was to establish a police force. The city also began to improve its infrastructure, paving streets and installing streetlights.
