History of Benton Harbor
Benton Harbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan that is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in Berrien County. The city is bounded by the city of St. Joseph to the north and the township of Benton Charter to the south. The city’s population was 10,066 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city by population in the state of Michigan.
The area now known as Benton Harbor was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians. Benton Harbor was first settled by Europeans in 1829, when a group of missionaries from the Methodist Episcopal Church arrived to provide religious and educational assistance to the Potawatomi. The city takes its name from Henry Hobson Bendon, a lawyer and judge from Mount Clemens, Michigan who platted the land in 1850.
