History of Amherst
Amherst was first settled in 1659 as a part of Hadley. The town was officially incorporated in 1731 and named after Lord Jeffery Amherst, the commanderinchief of British forces in North America during the French and Indian War. Amherst remained a mostly agricultural community until the early 19th century when a growing number of mills and factories began to spring up along the Mill River. The town was also home to several notable mothhunting pioneers during this time.
In 1838, Amherst College was founded, which would go on to become one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the country. The opening of the Amherst and Northampton Street Railway in 1887 brought even more industry and development to the town. Today, Amherst is a thriving college town with a population of over 35,000. It is home to a diverse mix of people and businesses and is known for its strong sense of community.
