History of Bebington
Bebington is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, in Merseyside, England. Historically part of Cheshire, it is situated on the Wirral Peninsula, 4 miles (6.4 km) to the south of Birkenhead and about 10 miles (16 km) from the city of Liverpool. The town has a population of 19,650.
Bebington appears in the Domesday Book as Berebentune. It is recorded as comprising 3 manors, which belonged to Earl Morcar before the Conquest, and subsequently to William I. This William was probably William Fitzeustace, who, in 1086, also held the neighbouring vill of Nestune (Neston). Berebentune was assessed for 2 hides, had 2 ploughs, 2 acres (0.81 hectares) of meadow, and woodland worth 20 hogs. Its value to the Lord in 1066 was £8, and in 1086 it had increased to £10.
In 1257 Berebante appears as part of the fee of James son of John de Aldrenge, which also included the vills of Neston and Wirmegay. By 1301 it had passed to the Malbedengs, who sold it in 1334 to William le Drapper. His grandson, another William, sold the estate in 1365 to Robert Troutbeck.
The Troutbecks were a wealthy family, who also owned large estates in northwest England. They held Bebington for over two centuries, during which time the village grew and prospered. By the early 1600s it had grown into a small market town, with a number of inns and shops. In 1614 Sir William Troutbeck was created a baronet, and in 1628 his son Sir Richard was raised to the peerage as Baron Troutbeck of Bebington.
By the early 1800s the population of Bebington had reached around 2,000. The coming of the railways in the mid19th century brought further growth, with a number of passenger and goods stations being built in the town. The opening of the Wirral Railway in 1886 led to the development of a number of residential suburbs, and the town continued to expand throughout the 20th century.
