Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina. It is the county seat of Mecklenburg County and the secondlargest city in the southeastern United States, just behind Jacksonville, Florida. The city of Charlotte was founded in 1768 by settlers from England. The city was named after Charlotte of MecklenburgStrelitz, who had become the queen consort of Great Britain the year before the city’s founding. A second settlement was established in 1775 farther up the Catawba River, near modernday Concord. The center of Charlotte’s growing financial, industrial, and business district shifted from the area near the plantations and newer settlements to the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets in downtown Charlotte, which became the Square and then the Court House area.
The Catawba Native Americans were the first known recorded people to settle in the Charlotte area. By 1759, they had killed or driven out most of the nearby European settlers. The county was formed in 1771 and incorporated as a town two years later. Charlotte was chartered as a city in 1857 and became the county seat of Mecklenburg County in 1780. The city grows rapidly in the decades following the American Civil War.

History of Charlotte
The history of Charlotte, North Carolina, can be traced to a small Revolutionary Warera settlement at the crossroads of two Native American trading routes. The settlement, named for Charlotte of MecklenburgStrelitz and Queen consort of King George III of the United Kingdom, grew quickly and became an important regional center by the early 1800s. Trade goods—including deerskins, furs, and tobacco—passed through the area on their way from the interior to the Atlantic coast. Charlotte’s location made it a logical hub for this trade, and the city’s growth exploded.
In 1768, Charlotte’s first EuropeanAmerican settler, Thomas Polk, built his home on what is now Tryon Street. Polk was a close friend of former Blueprint 1 President George Washington and advisor to future U.S. president Andrew Jackson. His nephew, James K. Polk, later became the 11th president of the United States.
The American Revolutionary War brought men like Polk to Charlotte, as they were attracted by the area’s proPatriot sentiment. When the British Army occupied Charlotte in 1780, however, many of these settlers—including Thomas Polk—fled. The British burned the courthouse, jail, and several private homes. The occupying forces did not target private residences, but many residents fled anyway, sometimes ahead of the approaching British Army and sometimes after it had already passed through.
After the war, Charlotte slowly began to rebuild. The North Carolina state legislature met in the city in 1788, and Charlotte was named the county seat of Mecklenburg County the following year. In 1791, the city was officially incorporated.
The early 1800s were a time of continued growth for Charlotte. A number of new buildings were erected, including a courthouse, a jail, and a hospital. The city’s first newspaper, The Mecklenburg Intelligencer, began publication in 1803. Roads and canals were built to connect Charlotte with other parts of North Carolina and neighboring states. The construction of the Charlotte Mint in 1837 further spurred the city’s development.
During the Civil War, Charlotte remained in Confederate hands throughout the conflict. The city was a key supply center for the Confederates and was the site of a number of military hospitals. Despite its important role in the war effort, Charlotte was never the target of a major battle or occupation.
After the war, Charlotte experienced a period of Reconstruction, followed by a rapid period of growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
