History of Lake Wales

Lake Wales is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,713 at the 2010 census. Lake Wales is located west of Kissimmee and Orlando.

Lake Wales was established in 1911 by the Lake Wales Land Company. Its founder, Dr. J. A. Singletary, envisioned it as a ” gateway city” for the proposed Atlantic Coast to Gulf of Mexico Canal. The canal was never built, but the city grew nonetheless. It was incorporated in 1925.

In the mid1920s, the city became a hub for the fledgling citrus industry. That industry suffered a devastating freeze in the 1930s, but Lake Wales recovered and continued to grow. It is now home to the U.S. headquarters of the Peace Corps.

The historic Bok Tower Gardens are located in Lake Wales. The gardens, built around the 275foot (84 m) tall Bok Tower, attract visitors from all over the world.

The city is also home to the Lake Wales Museum, which chronicles the city’s history. The museum is located in the former Historic Depot, which was built in 1908 and served as a train station until 1971.

The depot now houses the museum’s exhibits, which include a model of the planned Atlantic Coast to Gulf of Mexico Canal, as well as displays on the citrus industry and the influential role played by the late Dr. J. A. Singletary in the city’s development.
