History of Ouray

Located in the southwestern corner of Colorado, Ouray was originally inhabited by the Ute people. The first nonnative settlers arrived in the late 1800s, after silver was discovered in the area. The town was officially founded in 1876, and named after Chief Ouray of the Ute tribe.
