History
The town was founded as a station on the Denver, South Park, and Pacific Railroad in 1887. It was named by a railroad official after his hometown, Englewood, Illinois. The town was incorporated in 1903.
Geography
Englewood is located at 39°38′49″N 105°0′30″W (39.646875, 105.008275).[7] It is bordered by Sheridan to the west, Cherry Hills Village to the north, Denver to the east and south, and Arapahoe County, Colorado to the south and west.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (34.8 km2), all of it land.

History of Englewood (Colorado)
Englewood is a city in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The city is a suburb of the DenverAuroraLakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the city had a population of 30,255. Englewood is part of the DenverAuroraBoulder Combined Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Chicago, led by Richard Van Vleet, who purchased 640 acres (2.6 km2) of land just south of the confluence of Big Dry Creek and the South Platte River. Incorporated in 1903, Englewood is located in the South Platte River Valley east of the Front Range and directly south of central Denver.
Early history
The first European to visit the area that is now Englewood was Juan Bautista de Anza, who led an expedition from Santa Fe to establish the Spanish colony of Los Adaes in the area in 1706. The area was still part of France’s Louisiana Territory when silver was discovered in the nearby Rio Grande Rift in 1858, which caused a small mining boom. This soon attracted prospectors and settlers to the area in search of fortune.
In 1859, former slave and pioneer Greenberry Russell established a homestead at the confluence of Big Dry Creek and the South Platte River. He built a cabin, ranch house, blacksmith shop, and corral, and started a family. At the time, the area was still part of the large Arapaho Nation, but the U.S. government soon forced most of the Native Americans onto reservations. In 1863, the Colorado territorial government created Arapahoe County with its seat at Littleton; Englewood was named the county’s westernmost town.
Green Russell’s ranch served as a stopover for travelers along the South Platte River Trail between Denver and Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and was a popular hunting and fishing spot. It was also a reliable source of food and supplies for early settlers in the area. By 1879, the town had grown to encompass 1,000 acres (4 km2) and boasted a population of 200.
Development
After the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad bypassed Englewood in 1881, the town’s growth stalled. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railway in 1887 ensured Englewood’s future as a railroad town. The point where the Santa Fe tracks crossed South Broadway was designated as the town’s new commercial center, and the original plat of Englewood was replatted with wider streets and 20foot (6meter) rightofways. New businesses sprang up, including hotels, livery stables, and stores.
In 1901, the plat of Englewood was amended to include 63 additional blocks, and the town was incorporated as a city on November 24, 1903. By 1910, Englewood’s population had reached 3,724, and the town boasted a modern water system, electric street lights, and telephone service. Englewood was by then a fully established Denver suburb, and continued to grow rapidly in the following decades.
The 1960s and 1970s brought changes to Englewood. The city annexed the neighboring town of Tower on January 1, 1960, nearly doubling its size. The city also began to experience a declining industrial base and a decrease in population, leading to urban blight in some areas.
In an attempt to reverse these trends, Englewood’s business leaders formed the Englewood Economic Development Corporation in 1974. TheEEDC was responsible for the creation of the city’s first industrial park and the redevelopment of its commercial center.
The 1980s and 1990s saw a resurgence in Englewood’s economy, with the completion of several major office and retail projects, including the construction of the 1.1 millionsquarefoot (102,000 m2) Tabor Center. The city’s population also began to grow again, reaching a peak of 33,852 in 1990.
Today, Englewood is a thriving suburban community with a diverse economy. The city is home to a variety of businesses, from large corporations to small momandpop shops, and is a desirable place to live for families and young professionals alike.
