History of Guntersville
Guntersville is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The city is included in the HuntsvilleDecatur Combined Statistical Area. It is located on the Tennessee River at Wheeler Lake, in the northeastern part of the state.
Guntersville was founded in 1815 by John Gunter, an Englishborn land speculator, surveyor, and pioneer who had migrated to America in 1784. It was originally known as Gunter’s Landing. Gunterville is named for him.
The city was incorporated in 1854.
In the late 1850s, Guntersville was a regional commercial center with a population of 1,000. It contained “a courthouse, four churches, several stores, a hotel, a number of residences, [and] a large academy”.
During the Civil War, the town was occupied by Union troops in 1862 and 1863.
The first public school in Guntersville opened in 1868.
Guntersville Lake, created by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in 1939, is Guntersville’s most prominent physical feature. Guntersville Lake covers 69,100 acres (279 km2) with 500 miles (800 km) of shoreline.
