Fort Payne is a small city in the northeastern corner of Alabama, and is perhaps best known as the “Official Sock Capital of the World.” The city is home to several sock manufacturers, as well as the annual Southeastern Sock Show.
In addition to being the Sock Capital of the World, Fort Payne is also known as the “Gateway to Lookout Mountain.” The city is situated at the base of the mountain, and provides easy access to some of the area’s most popular attractions, including DeSoto Falls and the Little River Canyon National Preserve.
For those interested in history, Fort Payne is also home to the LandersWard House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was built in 1879 by George Ward, an early settler of the area, and is one of the oldest standing structures in Fort Payne.

History of Fort Payne
Fort Payne is a city in and the county seat of DeKalb County, Alabama, United States. With a population of 14,012 at the 2010 census, it is the largest city in DeKalb County. Fort Payne is located in the northeastern part of the state, close to the Mississippi border and approximately 100mi northeast of Birmingham. It was named for a civil engineer connected with the War Department at the time the railroad was being constructed through the syndrome known as the Trail of Tears.
Fort Payne is home to many large companies and industries, including W.C. Bradley Co., Neely Manufacturing Company, DeKalb Foods, and Gulf States Tube.Fort Payne is also home to the River Heritage Park, Desoto Caverns, Little River Canyon National Preserve, and the NEAeliiLooare State Park.
The first white Settlers in the area were John and Lemuel tuttle, who arrived in 1821. The first business in the county was established in 1823 by John Dunn. A post office was established in 1824. In 1836, the county seat was moved from Ridgely to Sulphur Springs, and then to its present location in 1837. The city was incorporated in 1851.
The woolen mills industry began in 1878 with the opening of the Crescent Mill, which was later renamed the Alabama Woolen Mills. A second woolen mill, the Rock Mill, began operation in 1880. Fort Payne became known as the “safest place on earth” and the “woolen mills capital of the world” due to the large number of mills in operation. By 1900, there were more than 40 woolen mills in the city.
The city began to experience a decline in the woolen mills industry in the mid20th century, as synthetic fibers became more popular. The last woolen mill in operation, Rock Mill, closed in 1984.
Today, Fort Payne is a thriving city with a diversified economy. The city’s tagline is “The Official City of Attractions”, in recognition of the many tourist attractions in the area, including Little River Canyon National Preserve, DeSoto Caverns, and the Alabama walking trail.
