The town was incorporated in 1854 and named for the locks on the Connecticut River that were built to facilitate trade and travel between Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts. The first European settlers arrived in the 1600s and the area became known as the Windsor settlement. The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution and became a major manufacturing center.

The community is located in the Connecticut River Valley on the eastern edge of the Hartford metropolitan area. It is bordered by the towns of East Hartford, Manchester, South Windsor, and Suffield.

History of Windsor Locks

The area now known as Windsor Locks was originally part of the town of Windsor. The first European settlers in the area were the Dutch, who arrived in the early 1600s. The English soon followed, and by 1633 the town of Windsor had been established.

The area known as Windsor Locks developed as a community in the late 1700s. A group of investors from Hartford bought land in the area and built a canal to connect the Connecticut River to Long Island Sound. The canal allowed for trade and travel between New England and New York City.

The community prospered and soon became a center for manufacturing. In 1833, the first factory in Windsor Locks was built. This factory produced carriages and buggy whips. More factories followed, and by the end of the 19th century, Windsor Locks was known for its manufacturing of brass and other metal products.

The community continued to grow in the 20th century. In 1918, the first airplane factory in Connecticut was built in Windsor Locks. During World War II, the town’s factories produced parts for military aircraft.

Today, Windsor Locks is a thriving community with a rich history. The town’s factories have been replaced by shopping centers and office parks, but the community continues to be a vibrant and thriving place to live.
