History of Willmar

Willmar is a city in, and the county seat of, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 20,386 at the 2010 census. Willmar was founded in 1857 by John H. Willmarth (1811–1872), who opened a grocery store and served as the first postmaster. The city was named after him. It was incorporated as a village in 1870 and as a city in 1901.
