History of West Bridgford

West Bridgford is a town in Nottinghamshire, England, west of Nottingham on the River Trent. It is part of the Rushcliffe borough. The town has a population of 25,789, making it the fourth largest town in the district of Rushcliffe.

The town owes its origins to the Saxon settlement of Bridgeworth which was located on the River Trent at a crossing point known as Wyche. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the settlement was recorded as “Bridgeford”. The name “West Bridgford” is first attested in 1519.

The town’s football team, West Bridgford United, were founded in 1887 and played their home games at the Trent Bridge ground. The team was disbanded in 2009.

The town has a long association with cricket. The first recorded match took place in 1771 between teams from West Bridgford and Loughborough. The Trent Bridge Inn was a coaching inn which had stables for 100 horses and accommodation for 30 guests. It was here that the great batsman WG Grace used to stay when playing for Nottinghamshire. The inn was demolished in 1884 to make way for the current Trent Bridge Cricket Ground.

Nottingham Forest Football Club played their home games at the cricket ground from 1889 until 1898 when they moved to the City Ground.

The Trent Bridge ground is also the home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. The first county match was played here in 1877.
