The town was founded in 1879 by James W. Webster, who named it after himself. The city was incorporated in 1953.

History of Webster
Webster is a city in Knox County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,638 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County.
The community was named for John James Webster, a landowner who donated land for a townsite in 1855. A post office was established that year, and the town served as a center for area farmers and ranchers. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built through the area in 1879, contributing to the town’s growth. By 1890, the community had a population of 500 and included two churches, a cotton gin and gristmill, and a weekly newspaper.
Despite its small size, Webster was a fairly bustling place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town had a hotel, livery stable, opera house, and several businesses. The first bank was chartered in 1904. The town also had an active social life, with clubs and organizations for both men and women.
Growth of the town slowed in the mid20th century. The population reached a peak of 1,000 in the 1950s, but began to decline thereafter. The last bank in town closed in the 1980s, and the only remaining business is a feed store. The population stood at just over 400 in 1990.
Although it is a very small town, Webster has a rich history. It was one of the earliest settlements in the area and was an important stop on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. The town has produced several notable people, including a Texas State Senator, a state representative, and a Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright.
