Sights in Warm Springs
Warm Springs is a city in Meriwether County, Georgia, United States. The population was 478 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Meriwether County.
Warm Springs was a resort town in the early 20th century. The city is best known as the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1924 until his death in 1945. Roosevelt was struck with polio in 1921 and came to Warm Springs for treatment. The springs were said to have healing properties, and the area became a successful resort with overlooks, golf, fishing, swimming and boating. It later developed into a small city with hotels, restaurants, movie theaters and other businesses.
The city’s residents voted to incorporate in 1906.
Franklin D. Roosevelt first came to Warm Springs in 1924 for treatment of his polio. He liked the area so much that he bought a nearby estate, which he named the Little White House. He used it as a Presidential retreat and as a base for his polio foundation. The town developed around him and the Little White House. Roosevelt died there on April 12, 1945 and is buried in the Warm Springs Cemetery.
Today, Warm Springs is a quiet city with a handful of businesses. The warm springs for which the city is named still flow and are open to the public for a small fee. The Roosevelt Institute operates the Little White House and offers tours of the historic site.
History of Warm Springs
Warm Springs, Oregon is a city located in Jefferson County. It is home to the headquarters of the National Forest Foundation. Founded in 1864 as the county seat of Wasco County, the city was later annexed into Jefferson County in 1874. The city’s name is derived from the nearby hot springs which were used by Native Americans for centuries.
The first European settlers in the area were members of the Lewis and Clark expedition who camped at the hot springs in 1806. In 1811, fur trapper David Douglas visited the springs and wrote about them in his journal. In 1864, the Wasco County courthouse was established in Warm Springs, and the city served as the county seat until 1874 when the county government was moved to The Dalles.
In the early 20th century, the city became a popular resort destination due to the benefits of the hot springs. The Wynne Hotel, which was built in 1912, was one of the first resorts in the area. It wasdestroyed by fire in 1938.
During World War II, the Warm Springs Indian Reservation was used as a internment camp for Japanese Americans. In 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt died at his home on the reservation.
Today, Warm Springs is home to the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs, as well as the Warm Springs Museum and the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center. The city is also a popular recreation destination, with hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting opportunities in the nearby Deschutes National Forest.
