History of Southampton

The city of Southampton is located in Suffolk County, New York on the South Fork of Long Island. The area was originally occupied by the Shinnecock Indian Nation, who were forced to cede their land to English settlers in 1640. The first settlers were from Lynn, Massachusetts, and the town was initially called “Southtown”. The name was later changed to Southampton in 1648.

Southampton was a prosperous whaling and fishing community during the 18th and 19th centuries. The whaling industry began to decline in the 1840s, however, and the town’s economy was dealt a further blow when the Long Island Rail Road bypassed Southampton in 1869. The town began to experience a revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due in part to the opening of several large hotels and the development of the summer tourist industry.

Today, Southampton is a popular summer resort destination, with its pristine beaches, upscale shops and restaurants, and historic sites. The town is also home to several prestigious institutions, including Stony Brook University’s Southampton campus, the Long Island Museum, and the Parrish Art Museum.
