Shinfield was first settled in the late Bronze Age. A number of burial mounds from this period can still be seen in the village. In the 1st century AD, the Romans built a villa in the village, which they used as a summer retreat. After the Romans left Britain in the 5th century, the village was inhabited by the AngloSaxons.
The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book, which was compiled in 1086. At that time, the village had a population of around 100. By the 13th century, the population had grown to around 200.
In the 14th century, the Black Death struck the village, killing around half of the population.
