History of Callington
Historically, the English town of Callington was situated in the county of Cornwall. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book survey of 1086, when it was known by its AngloSaxon name, Cawelton. The town’s name derives from the Old English personal name Ceala, meaning stream or brook, and ingtun, meaning village or farmstead.
The town grew up around an important Norman castle, strategically located on a hill overlooking the River Tamar. In the 12th century, the castle was the seat of the powerful de Callington family. The town flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries as a centre of the wool trade. By the 15th century, however, the town was in decline, and the castle had fallen into ruin.
In 1643, during the English Civil War, the town was the scene of a fierce battle between the Royalist and Parliamentary forces. The Parliamentarians emerged victorious, and the town remained under their control for the rest of the war.
In the 19th century, the coming of the railway brought renewed prosperity to Callington. The town became a thriving market town, with a strong agricultural economy.
