History of Scarborough

Scarborough is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 8,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

The area comprising presentday Scarborough was first settled in 1630 as a part of Saco. In 1658, it was set off and incorporated as a separate town, then called Scarborough after Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. There are five historic neighborhoods registered in the National Register of Historic Places: Dunstan Landing, Ferry Beach, Prouts Neck, scarboro, and West Scarboro.

Scarborough became a resort area with many hotels built in the late 19th century to attract tourists. The Grand Trunk Railway ran a line through the town, which brought tourists from away. One of the most notable resorts built in this era was The Elmhurst, constructed in 1883. This hotel provided activities such as billiards, bowling, and dancing. Another popular activity was fishing, as the town had both fresh and salt water access. The hotel burned down in 1914, but theScarborough Historical Society has since erected a replica on the same spot.

The 20th century brought change to Scarborough. The advent of the automobile meant that tourists were no longer tied to rail lines when choosing their vacation destinations. The Elmhurst was not rebuilt, but many people continued to summer in Scarborough. The construction of Interstate 95 in the 1950s spurred residential and commercial growth in the town, and Scarborough began to develop into the suburban community it is today.

Today, Scarborough is a bedroom community for Portland. Many people who work in Portland live in Scarborough because of its proximity to the city. The town is also home to a number of schools, including Scarborough High School, which is consistently ranked as one of the top high schools in the state.
