Scarborough became a resort area with many hotels built in the late 19th century to attract tourists. The Grand Trunk Railway ran a line through the town, which brought tourists from away. One of the most notable resorts built in this era was The Elmhurst, constructed in 1883. This hotel provided activities such as billiards, bowling, and dancing. The hotel burned down in 1914, but theScarborough Historical Society has since erected a replica on the same spot.
