Saltash is a town and civil parish in southeast Cornwall, England, UK. It has a population of 14,355. Located on the River Tamar estuary, it was once a docking point for crosschannel ferries to Plymouth. It is now twinned with Brest in Brittany, France.
The history of Saltash dates back to the Bronze Age. It is thought that the first settlers came to the area around 1500 BC. They built their homes on stilts over the marshes and wetlands that surrounded the River Tyne. Saltash gets its name from these early settlers, who were known as the ‘saltern people’ (salt workers).
