Reedsport is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,386 at the 2010 census. It is on the Umpqua River, near itsmouth on the Pacific Ocean. The economy of Reedsport is based on fishing, forestry, and tourism.
Reedsport is located at the junction of US Route 101 and OR Route 38, about midway between Eugene and Coos Bay. The Umpqua River estuary forms Reedsport’s harbor, which is protected by several small islands, including Smith Island just offshore, and Winchester Bay to the north.
The city was named after Joel Reed, an early settler. It was originally settled as a fishing village, and later became a center for the logging industry. Sawmills dominated the waterfront from the early 1900s until the 1930s, when the last one closed.
In recent decades, Reedsport has become a popular tourist destination, especially for sports fishing and clamming. The annual Salmon Bake celebration is held every September, and attracts visitors from all over the state.
The Reedsport area offers many outdoor recreation opportunities. Fishing, boating, and crabbing are popular on the Umpqua River, and there are several charter services that offer trips into the river and out onto the Pacific. History of Reedsport
Reedsport is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 4,154 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County.
The first EuropeanAmerican settlers arrived in the Reedsport area in 1852, when a party led by Amos Reed claimed land near the mouths of the Umpqua and Smith rivers. Reed built a sawmill and a dock, and the community that grew up around it became known as Reed’s Port. The first post office in Reedsport was established in 1857.
In 1865, the state legislature created Coos County, which included the Reedsport area. The county seat was originally located at Empire City, but was moved to Myrtle Point in 1867. In 1874, the state legislature partitioned Coos County, and Reedsport became the county seat of the newly created Douglas County.
The city was incorporated in 1893. The name “Reedsport” was chosen in a contest held to select a new name for the city; the winning entry was submitted by George A. Reed, son of Amos Reed.
Reedsport’s economy has long been based on the timber industry. The first lumber mill was built in 1853, and others followed. The city was also home to a sardine cannery, which operated from 1911 to 1979. More recently, Reedsport has become known for its dune buggy rides on the nearby Oregon Dunes.
Reedsport is located on the Oregon Coast, about midway between Newport and Florence. It is situated on the Alsea Bay, at the mouth of the Umpqua River.
The Umpqua River lighthouse, which was built in 1857, is located in Reedsport. The Heceta Head Lighthouse, built in 1894, is located about 12 miles (19 km) north of Reedsport. both lighthouses are now operated as museums.
