History of Red Wing
Red Wing is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States, on the Mississippi River. The population was 16,459 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Goodhue County[6] and home to the companies Red Wing Shoe Company and Riedell Shoes. Founded in 1854, Red Wing has a rich history tied to the river and the railroad. Native Americans occupied the area long before Europeans settled here. French explorers were the first Europeans to visit the area, and by the mid17th century, the Dakota were the primary residents. In 1825, the United States Army erected a fortified trading post called Fort St. Francis near the present day city of Red Wing. A Mdewakanton band gifted the land around the site to the United States in 1841, and three years later the Army abandoned the fort. The first settlers from New England arrived in 1852. The town was named after their guide, a Mdewakanton Sioux chief named Hupahuduta (sometimes spelled Hupahduta or Hupahhduta), whose nickname was “Red Wing” because of his brightly colored moccasins. The chief later joined with the Mdewakanton band in moving to the Crow Creek Reservation in presentday South Dakota. The first settlers who arrived in Red Wing came from Connecticut and Massachusetts. They settled on large tracts of land along the Mississippi River. Many of them were experienced farmers and had started farms in their home states. The rich farmland along the river attracted more and more settlers, and soon the small town began to grow. The first business in Red Wing was a gristmill built by Luther A. Kinney in 1853. The mill brought new life to the area and led to the development of other businesses. The first steamboat reached Red Wing in 1859. The boat, called the Anson Northrup, was built in Cincinnati and had a cargo of wheat and flour. The Northrup made three trips to Red Wing that year, and many more boats soon followed. The first railroad came to Red Wing in 1863. The railroad allowed farmers to ship their goods to market and brought more people and businesses to the town. The population of Red Wing grew quickly in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The city became known for its pottery and stoneware, and industries such as the Red Wing Shoe Company and the Red Wing Stoneware Company prospered. Today, Red Wing is a thriving Mississippi River community with a rich history. The city’s historic downtown is home to many shops, restaurants, and businesses.
