Portland was founded as a fishing village by the English in 1633 and named after the Portland Stone, a type of limestone that is found on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. The city grew rapidly during the 18th century, becoming a major shipbuilding center. By 1786, Portland had outgrown Falmouth (now Portland’s Old Port) and become the primary shipping and trade center for Maine.
