History of Provo
Provo is a city located in the county seat of Utah County, Utah, United States. Brigham Young University (BYU) is located in Provo, as is the LDS Missionary Training Center. It is the thirdlargest city in Utah after Salt Lake City and West Valley City.
The city was founded in 1849 by Feramorz Little and his family. They were among the first settlers in the area that would become Utah. Little chose the site because of its proximity to the Wasatch Mountains and the Provo River. The city was originally named Fort Utah, but was later changed to Provo in 1850.
Provo quickly became an important center in the Utah Territory. It was the site of the Utah War in 1857, which was a dispute between the federal government and the Mormon settlers in Utah. In 1858, the Utah Expedition was sent to Utah to put down the rebellion. The expedition did not find any rebels, but did establish Fort Cameron near Provo.
After the American Civil War, Provo became an important stop on the transcontinental railroad. The population of the city grew rapidly, reaching 5,000 by 1870. The city was incorporated in 1852.
Provo continued to grow in the 20th century. The population reached 26,000 by 1950. BYU was founded in 1875 and became an important part of the city. The city became known for its hightech industry in the 1980s.
