History of Petersfield
Petersfield is a market town in the South Downs National Park of England. The town has a long and rich history, dating back to the AngloSaxon period. Petersfield was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was known as Pirefelle. It is thought that the name means “fortified place on the Peaklesford stream”.
The town grew steadily throughout the medieval period, and by the 16th century it was an important stopping point on the Pilgrim’s Way to Winchester. Petersfield was also home to a number of notable residents, including the poet Andrew Marvell and the diarist John Evelyn.
