Panama City remained the capital until 1733, when it was destroyed by a fire. The capital was then moved to the city of La Havana. In 1819, Panama City became the capital once again. The city remained the capital of Panama until it was finally abolished as a country in 1903. The city became part of the United States Canal Zone, and it served as an American military base during World War II. In 1979, Panama City was handed over to the Panamanian government. The city has undergone a lot of changes since then, and it is now a thriving metropolis with a population of over 880,000 people.
