History of Oyster Bay
The area now known as Oyster Bay was first settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, who named it “Oosterbaai” (or “Eastern Bay”). The Dutch established the town of Oyster Bay in 1653, and three years later, the first recorded town meeting was held at Christ Church. In 1658, the English took control of the area from the Dutch, and the name was changed to “Oyster Bay.”
