Orange is a city located in the Southern California region of the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 139,812, making it the 191stlargest city in the United States. Orange is unusual in that many of the homes in its Old Town District were built prior to 1920. While most cities in Orange County underwent massive growth after World War II and became incorporated cities, Orange remained unincorporated and largely rural until the 1930s, when the population began to rapidly increase due to suburbanization. Orange is now a classic California city, with a strong economy and a diverse population.

History of Orange (California)
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area that is now Orange, California, was inhabited by the Tongva people. The Tongva referred to the area as “wilawila” or “randang”, meaning “headland”, or “point of the mountains”. The city was founded in 1869 and was incorporated as a city in 1888.
The city is named for the orange trees that thrived in the area. The first recorded orange grove in what is now Orange County was planted by Spanish missionaries in 1769.
Between 1804 and 1808, Spanish soldiers built a fort at the presentday intersection of Glassell Street and Lemon Street. They also constructed a mission, which was completed in 1823.
In 1801, the Spanish Empire granted 8,000 acres (32 km2) of land to Manuel Nieto, a retired soldier. The land included the sites of modernday Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Fullerton. Nieto constructed a ranch house and an adobe chapel, which became known as the Nieto Adobe.
In 1846, during the MexicanAmerican War, the Battle of Santiago Canyon was fought in what is now Orange. A group of American settlers occupied the ranchos after the war.
In 1869, the Orange City Colony was founded by Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, who had purchased 4,000 acres (16 km2) of land for $1,200. The colony was successful, and in 1871 Chapman and Glassell divided the colony into two parts: the northern part became the City of Orange, and the southern part became the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana.
In 1872, the City of Orange was incorporated. The city has a councilmanager form of government, and the current mayor is Theresa Whitehurst.
The city’s economic base is largely retail and service industries. The largest employers are St. Joseph Hospital, Chapman University, and the Orange Unified School District.
The city is home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, the Historic P battling White House, and the Heritage Square Historic District.
Orange is located in the Santa Ana River watershed and is bounded by the cities of Santa Ana, Tustin, and Villa Park. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of downtown Santa Ana and about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Los Angeles.
