Norwalk is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Huron County. The city is located in northern Ohio, on the southwestern shore of Lake Erie in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. Originally settled in 1810 by New Englanders as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, Norwalk was incorporated as a village in 1818 and later as a city in 1913.
The city’s name is derived from the Algonquin word “nouwotuck” meaning “point of land”, referring to the Norwalk Peninsula. The first permanent settlers in the presentday Norwalk area arrived in 1807, when a group of families from Connecticut purchased land in the Western Reserve. The town was officially founded in 1810 and was originally known as “Yankee Street”.
In 1812, Norwalk was destroyed by fire, but the determined settlers rebuilt and the town slowly began to grow. Industries such as shipbuilding, fishing, and agriculture were established in the early years and Norwalk soon became known as the “Banana Capital of the World”. The city continued to grow throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and today is a thriving community with a rich history.
