The first settlers of the area that is now New Britain arrived in 1687, and the city was officially incorporated in 1850. The city’s name comes from the fact that it was once part of the Hampshire Grants, given to settlers from England’s New Hampshire colony.

History of New Britain
New Britain, Connecticut was founded in 1687, at a site called Panthorn by a group of settlers led by Richard Seymour. The name “New Britain” was chosen to inspire settlers to remain loyal to the King of England during the unstable period of the late 17th century. Originally part of Hartford County, New Britain became part of Windham County in 1786.
What is now New Britain was once part of the Pequot country, and their main village, Sachimocomock, was located where Silver Lake now lies. The first European settlers of the area were Dutch, who purchased the land from the Native Americans in 1633. The English soon afterwards gained control of the region from the Dutch, and in 1663 the area was placed under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The first English settler in the area now known as New Britain was John Curtis, who arrived in 1679 and purchased land from the Massasoit Sachem. By 1687 there were about 30 families living in the area, and the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony established the parish of New Britain. The town incorporated as a city in 1871.
New Britain’s early economy was based on agriculture, with tobacco, hops, and dairy products being the main crops. The town also had a successful linen and cotton industry, which grew to become the largest employer in the city by the early 19th century. A number of manufacturing companies also began to locate in New Britain during the Industrial Revolution, attracted by the city’s water power and by its proximity to Hartford and New Haven. These companies included time clock manufacturer Seth Thomas, lacing machine manufacturer Webb Company, and the Stanley Works, which produced various tools and hardware items.
The city continued to grow throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, with new immigrant groups settling in the city and new industries locating here. The population reached a peak of 60,856 in 1950. The city subsequently experienced a decline in manufacturing jobs, which were replaced by jobs in the service sector. Today, New Britain is home to Central Connecticut State University and a number of large healthcare and insurance companies. The city has a population of 73,206 (2010 census).
