History of Nanticoke
The city of Nanticoke is located in the southern part of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. It is about 10 miles upstream from the city of WilkesBarre and is the third largest city in the county. The city was first settled in the early 18th century by Welsh immigrants who named it after the Nantego tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area. The Welsh were soon joined by other immigrant groups, including the Irish, Germans, and Italians. The city flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a coalmining and manufacturing center. However, the city’s economy declined after World War II, and its population has been declining since the 1950s. Today, Nanticoke is a largely poor and workingclass city, although its downtown area has undergone some revitalization in recent years.
