History of Millom
Millom is a small town and civil parish in southwest Cumbria, England. It had a population of 5,958 at the 2011 census. Millom is the administrative centre for the Borough of Copeland and is in the historic county of Cumberland.
The town is on the north side of the estuary of the River Duddon about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of BarrowinFurness. The Cumbrian coast line is some 10 miles (16 km) to the west.

There is evidence that the Millom area was settled in the Stone Age. Microsoft Encarta says that by the 1st century AD, the Celtic tribe of the Brigantes had a fort at the site. The name Millerum, first recorded in 1246, is generally thought to derive from the Old English words mylendun, meaning mill hill.
Most of the town’s growth, however, dates from the Victorian era when the Furness Railway reached the town in 1846, carrying iron ore from the mines at Millom and Haematite Hill to the steel works at Barrow. The railway’s freight business increased when, in 1859, the Coniston Copper Mines began to ship their ore via Millom. Passenger services ended in 1965 but freight traffic continued until the line’s closure in 1971.
The main local employer isformerly thetfresh produce supplier Mr Potato, which has a site on the outskirts of the town. The company has recently undergone a period of expansion.
