History of Mackinaw City
Mackinaw City is a village in Emmet and Cheboygan counties in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 803 at the 2010 census. The village is on the northern tip of the Michigan’s Lower Peninsula along the Straits of Mackinac. From here, the Mackinac Bridge connects the Lower to the Upper Peninsula. The principal industries are tourism, fudge shops, and replica shops of 18thcentury gear.
Mackinaw City is at the northern end of the Mackinac Island ferry service. These ferry boats transport passengers and vehicles to Mackinac Island, which lies 3mi offshore in the straits. Mackinaw City is also the northern terminus of the old Mackinaw Trail that ran between Detroit and Mackinaw City. The trailhead is located in town, close to the old bridge abutments on the waterfront. The Mackinaw Trail was one of the first highways in Michigan, and was used by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the area.
The first European settlers to the area were French missionaries and fur traders who came to the Straits of Mackinac in the 1600s. They established a fort on Mackinac Island, which served as a hub of the fur trade in the Great Lakes region. In the 1700s, British soldiers came to the area to take control of the Straits of Mackinac from the French.
