History of Catonsville
Catonsville is a suburb of Baltimore, located in southwest Baltimore County. Catonsville originated as a small farming village known as “The Forest Village” in the late 1600s. The first recorded land transaction in Catonsville took place in 1659, when Charles Carroll of Annapolis, MD purchased 100 acres of land from Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore.
The village continued to grow throughout the 1700s, and in 1728, a road was built from Baltimore to Annapolis that ran through Catonsville. This made the village more accessible to trade and travel, and by the mid1700s it had become a prosperous farming community with a population of about 100.
In 1831, the first store was built in Catonsville, and the following year a post office was established. The village slowly began to grow into a small town, and in 1854 it was officially renamed Catonsville after its founder, Richard Caton.
