History of Loughborough
The town of Loughborough, in the county of Leicestershire, England, has a long and varied history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The town’s name is thought to derive from the Old English for “lake town”, referring to the nearby River Soar. Loughborough was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was recorded as Lougheburg. At this time, the town was a small hamlet with a population of just over 100.
The 12th century saw the construction of Loughborough Castle, a motte and bailey fortress built by the de Lacy family. The castle played an important role in the Second Barons’ War of 12641267, when it was besieged by royalist forces. The castle was eventually captured and slighted (somewhat destroyed) on the orders of Prince Edward, the future King Edward I.
Despite this setback, Loughborough continued to grow and prosper in the following centuries. The town became an important centre for the woollen industry in the 15th and 16th centuries, and later for the hosiery trade. The Industrial Revolution saw further growth, with the town becoming home to a number of factories and mills.
