History of Littleborough
The earliest known settlement in the Littleborough area was the Iron Age hillfort known as Castlehaw, which was probably built around 100 BC. This was later occupied by the Romans, who built a fort here around AD 70. The fort was located on the road from Manchester to York, and was probably used as a base for the Roman army when they were campaigning in northern England.
After the Romans left Britain in the early 5th century, the area was settled by the AngloSaxons. The village of Littleborough is first mentioned in a document from AD 969, when it was recorded as Luttelburg. By the 11th century, Littleborough was a large and prosperous settlement, with a market and two mill. In 1066, the Normans invaded England, and the manor of Littleborough was given to one of William the Conqueror’s supporters, Roger de Lacy.
Littleborough continued to grow and prosper during the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, a weekly market and an annual fair were established here. The parish church of St Paul was built in the 15th century, and the grammar school was founded in 1624.
During the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, Littleborough became a major textile town, with several spinning and weaving mills. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built through the town in 1796, and the railway arrived in 1848.
