Bowdon is a small town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Cheshire, it is on the south bank of the River Mersey, 1.9 miles (3.1 km) south of Sale and 6.8 miles (10.9 km) southwest of Manchester. In 2001, its population was 13,689.
The first recorded mention of Bowdon is in a charter of AD 969, when Earl Leofwine of Mercia granted land to his thegn Aelfward. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the manor of Bowdon was worth £2 10s 0d. By 1292, the manor had changed hands several times and was worth £10. In 1596, the manor of Bowdon was sold by the Earl of Manchester to Sir Thomas Smythe, the Queen’s Treasurer.
The presentday village of Bowdon dates from the early 19th century, when a coaching inn was built on the turnpike road from Chester to Manchester. The Georgian architecture of this building, the Bowdon Hotel, is a local landmark.
