Liskeard is about 20 miles (32 km) west of Plymouth. The name of Liskeard is derived from the Cornish words ‘lys’ and ‘kerd’ which mean a court by the water. A common folk etymology is that the name refers to ‘Elisegard’ meaning ‘Elisha’s enclosure’. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. The town’s crest motto ‘ty aches an ky’, meaning ‘house and land’, refers to the purchase of the manor of Liskeard by the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral in 1308.
The Dean and Chapter were responsible for the founding of Liskeard Grammar School in 1512, which was one of the first free schools in Cornwall. Liskeard remained a market town and further thrived during the Industrial Revolution. The growth of the Tamar valley copper mines saw the town’s population expand rapidly in the early 19th century.
