History of Leeds
Leeds, situated in the Yorkshire county of England, is the UK’s fourth largest city with a population of over 700,000. The city has a rich and interesting history, dating back to the 5th century when the first AngloSaxon settlers arrived in the region. In the centuries that followed, Leeds grew from a small village into a bustling town and an important centre for industry and trade.
The city’s name is derived from the Old English word ‘ld’ meaning ‘ridgeway’ or ‘passage through the hills’, referring to the route taken by the Roman roads which passed through Leeds. However, the first evidence of human settlement in the Leeds area dates back even further to the Mesolithic period (around 10,000 BC). Excavations at Seacroft have uncovered flint tools and weapons which suggest that the site was used as a hunting ground.
By the time of the Roman invasion of Britain in the 1st century AD, the Leeds area was inhabited by the Brigantes, a Celtic tribe. The Romans built a number of roads and forts in the region, including a fort at Leeds which was occupied until the 4th century. After the Roman withdrawal from Britain, the area was settled by the AngloSaxons and the name ‘Ledes’ first appears in written record in the 7th century.
Leeds developed into an important town during the Medieval period. It was granted a market charter in 1207 by King John and its market square soon became one of the busiest in the country. The town prospered from the wool trade and by the 16th century Leeds had become one of the largest and most prosperous towns in England.
