History of Leavenworth
Leavenworth is a city in the state of Washington. The scenic Cascade Mountain town is located in the NorthCentral region of the state, approximately two hours east of Seattle. The city is part of the Wenatchee metropolitan statistical area. Leavenworth was founded in 1893 as a railroad town and was incorporated in 1906.
The town is situated on the banks of the Wenatchee River at its confluence with Icicle Creek in the Cascade Mountains. The elevation of the city is 1,700 feet (520 m) above sea level. The Cascade Mountain range protects the city from the worst weather systems that blow in from the Pacific Ocean, just to the west. As a result, the town receives only about 16 inches (41 cm) of precipitation annually, which is relatively dry for the Pacific Northwest. The average highs in July and August are in the low 80s Fahrenheit (low 20s Celsius), and the average lows in December and January are in the mid20s Fahrenheit (3 to 4 Celsius). Snowfall is usually light and occurs mostly in December, January, and February.
The Leavenworth area was originally inhabited by the Yakama, Wenatchi, and Chelan Native American tribes. The first settlers in the area were miners and railroad workers, who arrived in the late 19th century. In 1893, the Northern Pacific Railway completed a line through the nearby town of Wenatchee, making Leavenworth the last stop on the railroad. Railroad officials had originally planned to build the line through Leavenworth, but decided against it because the town did not yet exist.
In order to bring the railroad to Leavenworth, local businessman Carl Heckendorn platted a townsite and convinced the railroad to build a station there. Lots in the new townsite were auctioned off for $10 each. The first train arrived in Leavenworth on January 5, 1894.
The townsite was located in a picturesque valley surrounded by towering mountains, and it quickly became a popular tourist destination. In 1899, the Great Northern Railway completed a line through the Cascade Mountains, making Leavenworth even more accessible to tourists. The town became known as the “little Switzerland of the West” because of its alpine setting.
