History of Van Buren

Van Buren, Arkansas is a city in and the county seat of Crawford County, Arkansas. The city is located just north of the Arkansas River in the Ozarks in northwestern Arkansas. Van Buren was incorporated in 1842 and was named for thenPresident Martin Van Buren. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1840s and 1850s, aided by the arrival of railroad lines. The Crescent Hotel was built in 1886 and is now a National Historic Landmark.

During the Civil War, Van Buren was a Confederate supply center and staging area. The city was attacked in 1863 by Union troops under General James Blunt; the attack was repelled. Van Buren was the birthplace of Kenneth Lynch, who served as a general in the Arkansas National Guard from 1954 to 1968.

Van Buren is home to a number of historic properties, including the Belle Grove Historic District, the CarterMelton House, and the Old State House Museum. The city hosts an annual Festival of the Hills in late September/early October, which celebrates the city’s heritage. Van Buren is also home to the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, a twoyear institution affiliated with the University of Arkansas System.
