Ilkeston is a town located in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, approximately 8mi to the east of Nottingham and 10mi to the west of Derby.
The town is twinned with Long Eaton and Eastwood, both of which are located close by. Ilkeston is served by two railway stations, one located on the Midland Main Line and the other on the Erewash Valley Line.

History of Ilkeston
Ilkeston is a town in Derbyshire, England. It is located on the River Erewash, in the Erewash Valley, between Nottingham and Derby. The town had a population of 40,759 at the 2011 census.
The first mention of Ilkeston was in the Domesday Book of 1086, in which it was recorded as Iles Stone, meaning “island stone”. The name is thought to refer to a large glacial boulder in the river beside the settlement.
Ilkeston began to grow rapidly in the early 19th century due to the industrial revolution. The main industries at that time were coal mining and hosiery. In 1817, the first lace machine was brought to the town and within a few years, there were over fifty lace factories in Ilkeston.
The coming of the railways in the 1840s brought further prosperity to the town. With easy access to coal and other markets, industries such as brewing, engineering and brickmaking began to flourish. The population of Ilkeston grew from 2,500 in 1841 to over 10,000 by 1901.
The 20th century saw a decline in traditional industries, but Ilkeston has since become a thriving retail and service centre. The town centre underwent a major redevelopment in the 1990s and there are now several outoftown retail parks on the outskirts of the town.

History
Ilkeston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as a small village with a population of around 100. The town remained relatively small until the Industrial Revolution when it became an important coalmining town.
The Ilkeston Coalfield was one of the most productive in Derbyshire and at its peak in the early 20th century, there were 24 collieries in operation. The town’s economy declined after the mines closed in the late 20th century, but has since diversified with new businesses moving into the town.
Ilkeston Fair, held every October, is one of the oldest fairs in the country, dating back to 1252.

Ilkeston is wellserved by public transport links and is close to several major cities and towns, making it an ideal base for exploring the East Midlands.
