History of Hazard

Hazard is a city located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in east central Kentucky. The city has a population of about 1,700 people and is the county seat of Perry County. The city was founded in 1884 by John C. Hazard, a civil engineer and surveyor who laid out the town. The city was named for Hazard because of the dangerous rapids in the nearby river. Hazard was originally a part of Clay County, but became its own county in 1887. The city grew slowly at first, but began to grow rapidly in the early 20th century when coal mining became a major industry in the area. The city reached its peak population in 1950 with nearly 10,000 people. However, the coal industry began to decline in the latter part of the 20th century and the city’s population has declined since that time. Despite its declining population, Hazard remains an important regional center for healthcare, education, and commerce.
