History of Stillwater (Minnesota)
Situated on the St. Croix River, the city of Stillwater is the county seat of Washington County, Minnesota. Founded in 1848, Stillwater was the first city established in the county and is one of the state’s oldest cities. It is also the state’s oldest port town.
The first settlers in the area were mostly farmers from New England who were looking for new land to farm. They were attracted to the area by the rich soils and the abundance of timber. In the early days, the only way to get to Stillwater was by boat. The first road into the city wasn’t built until 1854.
Stillwater was officially incorporated as a city in 1858. That same year, the first bridge across the St. Croix River was built. The bridge was replaced in 1931 with the current Stillwater Lift Bridge.
The timber industry was the main driver of Stillwater’s economy in the early years. The city was home to several sawmills and lumber companies. The first school in Stillwater was built in 1853.
The 1800s were a time of great change for Stillwater. In addition to the timber industry, the city also became known for its granite quarries and for the production of stoves and other cast iron products. Stillwater was also the site of Minnesota’s first prison, which opened in 1853.
