History of Hastings
In 1066, the Battle of Hastings took place just south of the present town. William the Conqueror and his Norman army defeated King Harold and his AngloSaxon army, paving the way for the Norman Conquest of England.
The town itself was founded as a fortification soon after the battle, to control the route to London from the south coast. It was called “Haestingas”, from the Old English meaning “settlement of the people of Haesta”.

In the 13th century, the town was granted a charter by King Henry III, making it a free borough. This led to an influx of settlers and the town grew rapidly.
During the Hundred Years’ War, Hastings was repeatedly attacked by the French. In 1339, they succeeded in burning the town to the ground. It was rebuilt and reinforced, but suffered further damage in 1461 during the Wars of the Roses.
Despite this, the town continued to flourish and in the 16th century, became known for its production of gunpowder. By the mid1700s, it was one of the busiest ports in England, with over 500 ships sailing to and from the town each year.
