Harlingen,Texas is a Rio Grande Valley city in Cameron County. The city is located at the junction of Interstate 69E and Interstate 2, about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the Mexican border. The 2010 census placed the city’s population at 64,849, for a growth rate of 13.6% since the 2000 census. It is the city with the lowest cost of living in the United States.

Harlingen is a principal city of the Brownsville–Harlingen metropolitan area, which includes all of Cameron County. The Brownsville–Harlingen metropolitan area is one of the fastestgrowing metropolitan areas in the United States.

Founded in 1904, the city is named for the Dutch city of Harlingen, in the province of Friesland. The town was originally settled by the Llano Grande land company which purchased 64,000 acres (260 km2) of land from the King Ranch. The city is home to the Texas State Colleges & Universities System.

History of Harlingen

Harlingen is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The city is located on the northern edge of the Rio Grande Valley and is the seat of the county. The city was named after the city of Harlingen in the Netherlands. The town was first settled in 1904 and was incorporated as a city in 1910. The economy of the city is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The climate of the area is subtropical and the city is a popular destination for winter Texans.

Harlingen’s history begins with its founding by irrigator Lloyd T. Lewis and cattleman Bertram McLintock. The city was named after the Dutch city of Harlingen, Texas. The first post office in the city was established in 1907. The city was incorporated in 1910 with a population of 1,126. The economy of the city was originally based on agriculture and dairy farming. The Valley View Dairy was the first dairy in the Rio Grande Valley and was operated by the Lewis family.

In the 1920s, the city began to grow rapidly due to the development of irrigation projects in the area. The construction of the Harlingen Canal and the Arroyo Colorado Canal brought new businesses and industries to the city. The completion of the InterAmerican Highway in 1929 also contributed to the city’s growth.

The Great Depression caused a decline in the city’s economy, but the development of the Valley View Air Base in 1941 helped to boost the city’s fortunes.
