Forest Hills is a historic neighborhood and geographic area within the borough of Queens in New York City. Originally, the area was referred to as “Whitepot”. Forest Hills was established in forest Park in November 1923. The boundaries of the new development were set at Ascan Avenue, Commonwealth Avenue, and Continental Avenue (now called Queens Boulevard) and Exterior Street (now called 69th Road). The neighborhood shares borders with Forest Park to the south, Kew Gardens to the north, Rego Park to the east, and Elmhurst to the west.
Development of the area began in the late 19th century when it was still part of the town of Newtown. The developers purchased property in the vicinity of Forest Park and built country estates. The first streets were laid out in 1908, and construction on the Queens Boulevard line of the Long Island Rail Road began in 1913. The development of the area continued even after the opening of the subway line in 1915.

History of Forest Hills
The area now known as Forest Hills was originally settled by the Susquehanna people in the 1600s. The name “Forest Hills” comes from a large stand of hickory trees that was located in the area. The hickory trees were cut down in the late 1800s to make way for development.
The first residents of Forest Hills were farmers who settled the land in the 1700s. The area remained largely rural until the late 19th century when it began to be developed for residential use. The first streets were laid out in 1885 and the first homes were built in 1890.
