History of Finchampstead
Finchampstead is a village and civil parish in the Wokingham Borough of Berkshire, England. The village is situated 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Wokingham and 11 miles (17.7 km) east of Reading. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 5554 living in 2308 households.
The name Finchampstead is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means ‘finches’ homestead’. Finchampstead appears in the Domesday Book as Finchehamsted, and was part of the hundred of Barker Hundred. It was owned by the Bishop of Winchester, and comprised 33 hides. There were 5 mills and 10 acres (4.0 ha) of meadowland.
In the 13th century, the parish was held by thebers ofreading Abbey, before passing to the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Finchampstead was then bought by Sir Thomas Knyvett, who sold it to Sir Humphrey Forster in 1550. It remained in the Forster family for the next two hundred years.
The present day village is centred on a green, which was originally two fields known as the ‘North Field’ and the ‘South Field’. These were enclosed in 1760, at which time the village cross was erected.
Finchampstead evolved as a commuter village for London in the 20th century. Many of the houses were built in the Arts and Crafts style by local architect A.J. Stephens. The growth of the village was aided by the arrival of the M3 motorway in the 1970s.
