History of Yaxley
The English village of Yaxley is located in the county of Suffolk, approximately 5 miles north of the town of Haverhill. It is believed that Yaxley was founded in the late Saxon period and takes its name from the Old English words for ‘ ashtree clearing’.
In 1086, the Domesday Book records that Yaxley was held by the Abbey of St Edmundsbury, who also held the nearby villages of Great Saxham and Little Saxham. The abbey built a watermill on the River Stour which powered a fulling mill for the processing of cloth.
By the 13th century, Yaxley was a thriving community with a population of around 500. A market charter was granted in 1214, and by 1255 there was a weekly market and an annual fair. The parish church of St Peter and St Paul dates from this period, and was enlarged in the 14th century.
Yaxley continued to prosper in the 15th century, with the building of a second church, Holy Trinity, in 1448. However, the Abbey of St Edmundsbury went into decline after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, and Yaxley suffered as a result. The wool trade declined and the watermill fell into disuse.
In the 20th century, Yaxley underwent a revival, with many of its historic buildings being restored. Today it is a popular tourist destination, with a number of pubs, cafes and shops.
